As the leaves change and the air gets cooler, it’s the perfect time to start thinking about getting your car ready for the colder months. October is National Fall Car Care Month, which means it’s the best time to give your vehicle a little extra attention before winter arrives.
Whether you’re a car maintenance pro or just starting out, here are five must-do tips to get your car prepped for the season ahead.
October Is National Fall Car Care Month
April and October are the Car Care Council’s National Car Care Months. These times are perfect for getting your car ready for the changing seasons so it’s in great shape before summer or winter hits.
As temperatures cool down, it’s especially important to prep your car for the colder weather. Simple things like checking your tire pressure and battery can save you from surprise breakdowns and expensive repairs later on.
5 Tips to Prepare Your Car for Fall Car Care Month
- Change Your Motor Oil
- Inspect and Replace Windshield Wipers
- Check Tire Pressure and Tread Depth
- Test Your Battery and Electrical System
- Inspect Your Cooling System
As the weather cools, regular oil can thicken, making it harder for your engine to start and run. Switching to a high-quality synthetic oil, which flows more easily in the cold, will help keep your engine well-lubricated and protected, even in the winter weather.
Keep in mind that how often you need your oil changed depends on your car and driving habits. Check your owner’s manual or ask your mechanic for the best schedule for your vehicle.
Fall is the perfect time to check your windshield wipers and make sure they’re working properly.
Look for any cracks, tears, or loose blades that could affect how well they work. If they’re leaving streaks or not clearing your windshield, it’s time for new ones. A good set of wiper blades can really improve your visibility in rain, snow, or ice.
Also, don’t forget to check your wiper fluid levels. Switching to a winter-blend formula will prevent the fluid from freezing and protect your wiper system.
Start by checking the air pressure in each tire, including the spare, and make sure they’re inflated to the recommended PSI. Tire pressure can drop by about 1 PSI for every 10-degree drop in temperature.
Next, look at the tread depth. Worn-out tires can affect your car’s handling and braking, especially in wet or icy conditions. A simple trick is to use a penny — if you can see the top of Lincoln’s head when you stick it in the tread, it’s time for new tires.
Cold weather can wreak havoc on your car’s battery and electric system. As the temperature drops, your battery’s performance can suffer, which might lead to starting problems or even a dead battery.
It’s a good idea to have your battery tested by a professional. Check for corrosion on the terminals and make sure the connections are secure. If your battery is 3-5 years old, consider replacing it before it dies during a cold snap.
Also, take a look at your car’s electrical system — check the alternator, wiring, and all lights. Make sure headlights, taillights, turn signals, and hazard lights are working properly to keep yourself safe and visible on the road.
Coolant (or antifreeze) keeps your engine from overheating and helps it run. During Fall Car Care Month, consider having your cooling system flushed and refilled with fresh, high-quality coolant designed for winter conditions.
Also, take a moment to check the hoses, belts, and other parts of the cooling system for leaks or damage.
