Buying a new car can be very exciting. From the moment you drive it off the lot, you take in that “new-car smell” and you become enamored. But over time, things start to go wrong and you begin to realize that your dream car was a big mistake.

Consumer Reports spends a lot of time helping consumers make the best decisions regarding all types of products on the market, including automobiles. “But the same testing and surveys we use to make those determinations also show us, and you, products to avoid,” says Consumer Reports.

This year, Consumer Reports compiled a list of the “worst pics in 10 popular categories based on the lowest Overall Score,” said Michelle Naranjo of Consumer Reports. Naranjo went on to say that while some of the cars on this year’s worst list have their fans, Consumer Reports suggests these vehicles stay off your shopping list.

1. Lowest-Rated Subcompact Car: Mitsubishi Mirage

At 37 mpg, this affordable car seems like a great deal, but the latest enhancements can’t mask the vibrating three-cylinder engine.

2. Lowest-Rated Compact Electric/Hybrid: Mitsubishi i-MiEV

This is one of the cheapest electric cars on the market, but Consumer Reports calls it “slow, clumsy, and stiff riding.”

3. Lowest-Rated Compact Car: Fiat 500L

This car earned a poor road-test score due to its odd driving position, flat seats and stiff ride. According to Consumer Reports, the 500L has “one of the worst reliability scores among all new cars.”

4. Lowest-Rated Midsized Sedan: Chrysler 200

Consumer Reports described this sedan as clumsy; it also said that its engine is uncooperative. “This transmission is uncooperative and has proven to be a reliability albatross,” says Consumer Reports.

5. Lowest-Rated Compact Pickup: Toyota Tacoma

Consumer Reports says that the Toyota Tacoma’s reliability is much worse than average, and “there is no escaping this primitive truck.”
