Not every car in today’s market is a hit. Even with new features or low prices, some models just don’t measure up in terms of reliability and quality. We want to help you spot these issues so you can steer clear of the hassle that comes with potentially owning a lemon.

Find out which vehicles have been deemed the most reliable cars of 2024 below!

Most Unreliable Cars of 2024

Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

Chrysler’s Pacifica Hybrid has plenty of family-friendly features, but according to Consumer Reports, its reliability is poor. With an underwhelming score of 14 out of 100, it allegedly has problems ranging from battery and electrical charging issues to electric motor malfunctions and in-car electronics glitches.

Volkswagen Taos

While the Volkswagen Taos has good fuel efficiency and a spacious interior, its interior quality and driving performance fall short. Even worse, Consumer Reports rated it the second least reliable car of 2024, with a score of 18. The Taos reportedly has problems with its brakes, transmission, engine, and in-car electronics.

Rivian R1T

The Rivian R1T is one of the most capable EVs on the market, offering fast speeds and great off-road performance. That said, it’s not budget-friendly, doesn’t include Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and has a low-reliability rating of 22 on Consumer Reports because of climate control, drive system, and body hardware issues.

Mini Cooper Electric

The Mini Cooper Electric keeps its classic look, but its 110-mile range on a full charge falls short compared to other affordable electric cars. Competitors like the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Nissan Leaf can almost double that range, making the Mini a tougher sell for drivers who need more distance on a charge.

Volvo XC60

Even though the Volvo XC60 looks stylish, it’s not the car to pick in 2024. Consumer Reports rated it as one of the least reliable vehicles, with a score of just 21. The SUV has several problem areas, including the battery, charging system, in-car electronics, and climate control.

Alfa Romeo Tonale PHEV

The Alfa Romeo Tonale PHEV has a 285-horsepower engine, but its performance on the road appears to be underwhelming. According to consumers, the steering feels disconnected, and the handling isn’t as tight as you’d want it to be. The powertrain also feels weak at higher speeds, especially with newer, better subcompact SUVs now on the market.

Mitsubishi Mirage G4

Mitsubishi’s 2024 Mirage G4 offers impressive fuel economy at a low price, but that’s about it. The 1.2-liter engine only delivers 78 horsepower and is said to feel weak. Inside, it’s made of cheap materials, noisy, and has poor soundproofing. The build quality isn’t anything to write home about, and its reliability rating isn’t very high either.

Ford F-150 Hybrid

While Ford’s hybrid F-150 comes with a powerful 400-horsepower engine and a 700-mile driving range, its reliability is supposedly a big issue. Consumer Reports gave it a 19, making it the third least reliable car in 2024. The truck is said to have problems with the transmission, electrical system, battery, drive system, and even the in-car electronics.

Toyota bZ4X

Toyota’s first electric SUV, the bZ4X, delivers a smooth ride, roomy interior, and quick acceleration but has otherwise fallen short of consumer expectations. Its highway range is only 228 miles for all-wheel drive (AWD) and 252 for front-wheel drive (FWD), plus it charges slower than competitors. In an already crowded electric SUV market, the bZ4X apparently struggles to stand out.

Mercedes-Benz GLE

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE offers a powerful engine, a quiet cabin, comfy seats, and high-end details. However, it’s had some reliability issues recently.

According to reports, the third-row seats are cramped, the infotainment system is confusing, the steering controls are finicky, and the ride can be somewhat stiff because of the large wheels. Plus, you’ll need to pay top dollar to get the best features and experience the full comfort of the brand.

Toyota Mirai

The 2024 Toyota Mirai is a zero-emission car with excellent performance and a high-end interior. However, since it runs on hydrogen and there are fewer than 100 refueling stations in the U.S., mainly in California, it’s not very practical for most drivers.

Nissan Pathfinder

Nissan’s 2024 Pathfinder is considered a reliable family car, but despite its rugged appearance, it doesn’t perform as well off-road as some competitors — even with the Rock Creek Edition. The vehicle has a practical interior and good towing capacity. However, it’s not the best pick if you’re looking to go off the beaten path.

What Makes a Car Reliable?

When buying a new car, reliability is one of the most important things to look for. A dependable vehicle keeps you on the road without worrying about frequent repairs or breakdowns. So, what actually makes a car reliable

It’s all about strong, well-made parts like the engine, transmission, and electrical systems, as well as the materials used inside and out. Brands that prioritize quality and test their cars thoroughly tend to build more reliable vehicles.

Another factor is a car’s history. Models with fewer issues, cheaper repairs, and happy customers are usually the most reliable. And if parts are easy to find and the manufacturer offers good customer service, that’s a bonus.

How Does Consumer Reports Measure Reliability?

Consumer Reports is a trusted source for checking a car’s reliability. They gather information from their subscribers and use a detailed process to rate each vehicle.

The reliability score ranges from 1 to 100, with 100 being the best. It factors in how often problems happen with key parts like the engine and electronics and how serious those issues are.
