The U.S. government’s road safety agency recently opened an investigation into possible fuel leaks by more than 614,000 vehicles manufactured by General Motors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said that it received more than 200 complaints from vehicle owners with 2008-2010 Cobalt cars and 2008-2009 Chevrolet HHR SUVs.

Thirty-nine of the complaints specified that there were puddles and drips coming from the vehicles. Safety concerns arise as leaking fuel that makes contact with a hot ignition can cause a fire. However, none of the reports have reported any fires, accidents, or injuries yet.

The agency said in documents that the leaks are “the result of corrosion of the metal fuel lines underneath the vehicle near the left rear wheel well. The corrosion occurs at the polymer blocks that attach the fuel lines to the underbody and underneath an insulation wrap-heat shield adjacent to the exhaust pipe and muffler.”

Note that this is a preliminary fuel leak investigation by the NHTSA. While there is no recall at this time, we will be updating our website with the results of the Chevrolet Cobalt and HHR investigation and any changes in potential legal action for consumers.
