Kia Recalls Nearly 380,000 Vehicles for Potential Fire Risk

Similar to a recent recall by Hyundai, Kia is recalling nearly 380,000 of its vehicles due to potential engine fire risks. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHRSA), the following Kia vehicles are included in the recall:

  • 2017-2019 Kia Cadenza models
  • 2017-2021 Kia Sportage SUV models

Short-Circuited Engines in Kia Vehicles

The issue is due to a possible short circuit in the hydraulic electronic brake control unit (HECU), which is part of the braking system. A short circuit can cause excessive current and lead to an increased risk of an engine fire. Before a fire starts, drivers may notice illuminated warning lights as well as a burning or melting smell coming from the engine department.

The Korean car manufacturer recommends that all drivers of their recalled vehicles park the cars outside and away from structures until the problem is resolved. According to experts from Consumer Reports, here’s what you should do if your vehicle catches fire:

  • Pull over and shut your engine off. This stops the flow of fuel.
  • Get yourself and your passengers out of the car as quickly as possible. Make sure to stay a significant distance away from the vehicle, at least 100-150 feet.
  • Call 911 or have someone else call so that emergency services come to the scene as soon as possible.
  • Only attempt to put the fire out if you have clear access to the source, have a fire extinguisher, and can maintain a safe distance from the car.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and never stand in the middle of traffic.

What To Do If Your Vehicle Is Affected

Kia is expected to begin notifying affected vehicle owners in April and provide free repairs. If your Kia vehicle was affected by the engine fire risk recall or another issue altogether and the manufacturer has unsuccessfully tried multiple times to fix the issue, you may have legal rights as a consumer to pursue a lemon law case.

At Norman Taylor & Associates, our Los Angeles lemon law attorneys have helped over 10,000 clients and recovered more than $140 million in refunds. We offer free, no-obligation consultations, so please don’t hesitate to reach out to learn more about your legal rights.
