Last September, the South Korean auto manufacturer, Hyundai, issued a recall for certain 2019-2021 models of Tucson crossover SUVs due to an electrical short in the car’s computer that could potentially start fires, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The initial recall was for about 180,000 vehicle models. In January, however, the recall expanded to include certain 2016-2018 models, nearly half a million additional vehicles that could pose the same risk.

Problems With the Anti-Lock Braking System

So, what exactly is wrong with the Tucson SUVs that causes the fire risk? Essentially, the affected vehicles are each equipped with an Anti-lock Brake Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) that has the potential to corrode internally and cause an electrical short. As a result, the short may result in a fire within the engine compartment.

While Hyundai states that it is safe to drive the vehicles until they remedy the problem, the company recommends parking outside and away from houses, garages, and other structures in the meantime in case a fire does start. Additionally, owners should be wary of smoke coming from the engine, a burning odor, or an illuminated ABS light.

If your Hyundai vehicle was affected by the fire engine risk recall or another issue altogether, the car manufacturer is required to remedy the problem free of charge. However, if you already gave the manufacturer a reasonable number of chances to repair any issue, then you may be able to pursue a lemon law case and seek a full refund.

What To Do If You Have a Recalled Hyundai Tucson

At the time that this article was written, Hyundai reported 12 known engine fires with no reported injuries. Hyundai announced that they will start notifying vehicle owners of the recall beginning this month so that they can bring their cars into the dealership to get fixed free of charge.
